Anonymous Woman (AW): I can’t remember the exact year I signed up… Actually, now that I think about it, that was how most of the messages I got started.

I don’t know, maybe some girls might think of that as a compliment but personally, I would have preferred a simple message like, “Hey, would you like to talk?

” “Send your resume on special paper through overnight mail, and the hiring manager will be blown away by your initiative!

” “Send a cake with your resume written out in frosting!

I have to mention that I did get maybe a message or two from guys that seemed okay, but once I checked out their profiles, it didn’t seem like we had anything in common so I didn’t bother.

Also, some of the messages I got were from a few guys that ranged from early 40’s to late 40’s and I was maybe 19 at the time.

(You also don’t hear much about what it’s like for the person who triumphed through gumption and is now stuck working for a manager who responds to gimmicks over substance.) For some reason, gumption advice just won’t die, despite being uniformly terrible. What’s the weirdest or worst gumption advice you’ve heard?

Okay, it’s time to have an open and frank discussion about the battle of the sexes and the dating game.

RD: From your experience, do you think dating sites can be at all useful for girls? I know people who have had great successes with online dating! I have a strong preference toward meeting people in person FIRST, instead of online first. RD: How did you eventually end up meeting the guy you ended up marrying?

RD: If there are guys looking to actually get the attention of a girl on these dating sites, do you have any advice for them? AW: We lived across the hall from each other our first year of university.

What I learned from carrying out an interview of a female and the interview of a male trying to dig into this intriguing subject was that using the Internet for dating is equally painful for men and for women, but for very different reasons.

  1. I’m not saying that you’re going to fuck a lot of chicks almost immediately. If you’re going to make a promise, deliver on that promise. A little integrity goes a long way because let’s face it, women don’t have time for bullshit.

  2. The idea is presumably to safeguard people from searching for their own spouses on the site - though how a husband would explain to his errant wife how he came to stumble across her picture on a website for adulterers, I don't know.
